How to Capture Screen Shots Using a Mac.

April 1st, 2009 by Chris Gunnels

I am somewhat new to Macs and I wanted to capture a few screen shots for a quick training I’m doing for a new NetBeans file type I’m creating. The file type is for the Cucumber behavior driven development rails gem. After a little research I ran across a great tutorial on About.com for all the ways to capture screen shots with your Mac. Here are the screen capture ways I will be using for my training:

1. Capture a portion of your screen
press Command+Shift+4 and a little cross hair cursor appears. Click, hold, and drag your mouse button as you select the screen area you want to capture. Once you have selected the correct area let go of the mouse button. Wah Lah…Mac saves the file to your desktop automatically for you.

2. Capture the entire screen
press Command+Shift+3 and the entire screen has been captured and saved to you desktop.

You can even go as far as saving the screen shot/capture on your clipboard by pressing the same keys as above while also pressing down Control. Example: for a portion of the screen that you want to capture to your clipboard instead of to your desktop, you would press Command+Shift+4+Control (might take both hands unless your truly gifted ;] ).

If you want to learn more I suggest reviewing the tutorial on About.com mentioned above.
